Modern detectors measure
numerous properties of the many outgoing
particles from high energy collisions. Often particles are too short-lived
to be detected, so they must be deduced from their resulting decay products.

To look for these various particles and decay products, physicists
design detectors with many components. Different components measure
energies, momenta, and charges for different kinds of particles.
When all these components work together to detect an event,
individual particles can be singled out from the
multitudes for analysis.
