Horizons, ultrashort Solitons, and Rogue Waves in nonlinear dispersive
optical Media

Abstract:

Several concepts for the description of nonlinear pulse propagation in
dispersive optical media will be introduced. Among those are envelope
models, short-pulse equations, as well as our generalized approach
[1]. The predictivity of such models will be discussed in relation to
prominent effects as soliton propagation [2] and supercontinuum
generation.
A particular feature is the realization of event horizons using
nonlinear pulse propagation.
For integrable cases analytic solutions to nonlinear propagation
equations will be demonstrated, among those heteroclinic connections
generated from plane waves which undergo the modulation instability.
Limits of such heteroclinic connections include Rogue Waves, i.e.
rational solitons that appear from nowhere and vanish without a trace
[3].
